HCA

DIGITAL HEALTH

INITIATIVE

2023-2024

WELCOME!

HCA is a private Pre-K through 12th grade school in Overland Park, KS serving approximately 725 students. In Spring 2023, the school’s board and administration identified digital health as a prerequisite to the success of the school’s mission. As co-founder and former content director at Screen Sanity, I was engaged to design and pilot a comprehensive Digital Health Initiative, using Screen Sanity resources to establish the digital health conversation as a key priority in the HCA community. We administered a baseline digital health survey in April 2023 and are planning to a post-initiative survey in April 2024 to measure progress towards our intended outcomes. (See slides below.)

APRIL 2023 // first touch

Even though the initiative wouldn’t kick off until August, the board wanted to keep momentum going in response to a January town hall meeting where healthy digital habits were introduced. These magnets were distributed in classrooms as a “sneak peek” at the priniciples that would be introduced in depth in the fall.

MAY 2023 // SUMMER SURVIVAL KITS

Most unhealthy screentime habits accidentally form when the family is going through a transition, and hasn’t paused to make a plan for the role they want technology to play in the next season of family life. This is never more true than when families transition from the structure of the school day to to a summer schedule that typically involves more downtime. HCA identified the last couple of weeks of May as a critical intervention window, and provided “Summer Survival Kits” filled with printed Screen Sanity resources to help families make a plan and get ahead of screentime battles before summer break.

MAY 2023 // RISING 6th GRADE NIGHT

Another critical transition period for families is the shift from an elementary campus to a middle school campus. Oftentimes, this is when families experiment with smartphones, hoping to give kids more independence while staying connected. It’s critical that families are educated about how to take a “driver’s ed” approach to smartphone introduction, releasing responsibility slowly and gradually as the student demonstrates competence. That way, when parents walk into a phone store and are offered a free phone promo for the kids, a gameplan is already in place. At this event, I was able to introduce the driver’s ed concept not only the parents, but also the kids…which had the added benefit of disarming “FOMO” because the community was all in the room to link arms and get on the same page about this important digital transition.

JUNE 2023 // PARENT HOST TEAM

Rather than providing a one-and-done parent night, HCA really wanted to embed digital health principles in the culture. This meant recruiting a K-12 parent leadership team to champion the message and support families throughout the school. Here’s an overview of recruiting and prepping those parent leaders for the work ahead. (Please excuse the awkward shot of my chin at the bottom. Ah…the joys of piloting!)

AUG. 2023 // STAFF KICKOFF

In August, we kicked off HCA’s Digital Health Initiative with a staff training for 6th-12th grade teachers. (The K-5th grade teachers completed their PD session later, in October.) The upper school staff had been introduced to the START principles in October 2022, so this training was really focused on taking those principles and integrating them into the classroom setting. An educator by profession, this session was a highlight for me. Check out these takeaways:

“As a teacher, the Screen Sanity presentation to the faculty was very impactful. It especially gave me a lot to think about in regards to how the way that I set up my due dates affects my students' online behavior and routines. Since that presentation, I have done away with midnight deadlines and swapped with 10pm deadlines.”

—Ashton Nelson, Yearbook Advisor + Teacher, HCA Upper School

AUG. 2023 // KICK OFF, SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

One of the most powerful hallmarks of the HCA Digital Health Initiative is that the senior community leader, Pastor Tony Felich, has been a strong champion for the initiative. He introduced the initiative to HCA families by sharing his own story as a parent with vulnerability, established its critical to the success of HCA’s educational mission, and offered parents practical steps to get involved. He also listed the names of the Parent Host Team with contact information.

AUG. 2023 // BACK TO SCHOOL MATERIALS

In August, we kicked off HCA’s Digital Health Initiative with a staff training for 6th-12th grade teachers. (The K-5th grade teachers completed their PD session later, in October.) SEPT. 2023 // 6th GRADE ORIENTATION

While the 6th graders got settled in their lockers and found their classrooms, we used this opportunity to offer a second message for parents. Here’s a quick recap of the content:

SEPT. 2023 // parent nights

Using Screen Sanity’s turnkey Parent Night Kit, we hosted three events to create a safe environment for parents to talk about technology struggles in our homes and connect to a support network. The Parent Night Kit is designed to provide tips at every age and stage of the journey, but we broke the experience into three nights so people could interact with parents who are facing similar age-appropriate struggles: Early Elementary (PreK-3rd), Upper Elementary (4th-7th) and Upper School (6th-12th). The Parent Host Team was there to offer followup opportunities and conversations. While many of the topics we cover are heavy, you can hear the levity in the room when parents link arms, swap tips, and encourage each other.

SEPT. 2023 // FATHER’s CLUB PARTNERSHIP

The Father’s Club is a dad-led, grassroots effort creating simple ways for dads to be intentional with their kids, with other dads and within their community. The HCA chapter came alongside the digital health initiative to provide additional parent night promotions, welcoming fist bumps at the door, and powerful leadership in the parent night conversations.

FALL 2023 // NEXT STEPS

At the end of the parent nights, parents had the opportunity to sign up for what next steps they were interested in—opportunities offered by the Parent Host Team. Of these, the most well-attended was Internet Filters 101, where a few veteran parents shared about filtering solutions and challenges they had tried in a casual setting.

OCT. 2023 // MESSAGE REINFORCEMENT

JAN 2024 // ONGOING STORYTELLING

At a parent townhall meeting in January, Pastor Tony Felich reemphasized the importance of engaging with the Screen Sanity resources and being intentional about adopting healthy digital habits as a family and as a community. His leadership has been a critical piece of helping this initiative take flight.

MARch 2024 // student IMPACT

In March, yearbook instructor Ashton Nelson shared incredible insights into the ways the students intentionally considered digital health in the development of the yearbook this year. The conversations the editors had when choosing exactly how to execute their plan are INSPIRING. Here’s the recap!
